A short follow-up to yesterday's special report on Meta's new image model, Muse Image, and the Instagram setting that was switched on by default. One thing has moved since, and there is one control we did not flag that you should also switch off.

After several days of backlash over privacy and consent, Meta has suspended the feature and said the rollout had missed the mark. If you spoke up about it, that response is partly down to you.

Your audio is a separate setting, and it still says Meta AI

Meta softened the wording on the main posts and reels reuse control, dropping "AI" from its title. But there is a distinct setting one step down, headed "Allow people to create with and reuse your original audio on Meta AI." That wording has not changed. Meta's own text reads: "anyone can create with all or part of your original audio on Meta AI apps and websites." It is written as an opt-out, which means it is on unless you turn it off. The image feature retreated. This one did not.

Two things about your audio are worth separating, because they are not the same. Other people reusing your original audio in their own reels cannot be switched off at all. Meta AI using your original audio can, through that setting, and it is the part fewest people know is there.

What to switch off (about two minutes)

It is three toggles now, not two. In your Instagram settings, find the sharing and reuse controls and turn off:

  1. Reuse of your Posts.
  2. Reuse of your Reels.
  3. The separate toggle for reusing your original audio on Meta AI.

Labels and location shift by app version, so if you cannot find them, search your settings for "reuse". None of this is retroactive: anything already created from your content stays unless you delete the original, so the sooner you switch these off, the less there is to make.

Pulling one feature was never going to close the whole door anyway. While your account is public, your reels and photos can be reused by anyone in remixes, templates and stickers, your reused content can surface in search results, and anything downloadable can be pulled into any AI tool by whoever downloads it. Switching a Meta feature off does nothing about the stranger who screen-records your reel and feeds it to a model themselves. The exposure was never the feature. It was being public and reusable.

A fair word on what is settled. The suspension of Muse Image is widely reported. The audio setting is live in the app right now. This is still a developing story, and we will keep watching it for you rather than call it either way too soon. The lasting point is the same one worth carrying into every platform you rely on: read the setting, not the headline.
